SCG bio

Growing up in South Carolina, I experienced large grassy fields, stormy ocean waves and friendships with the roots of canopied oaks. Aspiring to be an artist at the age of six, I benefited hugely from public school programs, outside lessons, and the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts. After finishing a Bachelor’s in Political Science at the University of South Carolina, I moved to the mountains near Asheville. Through a year of introspection, while living in the woods and working professionally in the city, I chose to return to school and finally focus on my art. Western Carolina University offered a talented faculty with varied experiences and a nurturing environment. I studied painting and ceramics there and completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2000. After graduation, I spent years living between east and west. While living in the urban environment of Denver, I gained exposure to a spectrum of contemporary art. This influence combined with the very sensory experience of living a year on Edisto Island caused a shift in my work to an explorative treatment of landscape; where, previously, it had been mostly representational. In December 2004, my husband and I moved to Charleston. Both the natural and cultural environments of this city have been beneficial to my work. I have exhibited at “Pieces of Sanity” at the Humanities Center (January 2005), “life + line” at Pure Theatre(May 2006) and “Jailhouse Art” at the Old City Jail(November 2006). My work can regularly be found at Cone 10 Studios in downtown Charleston and City Art Gallery in the Vista of Columbia, SC.
